El Paso father out $500 after Christmas present found stuffed with clay

EL PASO, Texas -

It was a difficult Christmas morning for the Rivera family

10-year-old Zyanna unwrapped one of her presents, finding the gift that had been at the top of her Christmas list.

But as she pulled the packaging apart for her brand new Apple Watch given by Santa Claus, she was confused by what she had found.

"All I wanted was that watch and it was all just clay inside," said Zyanna.

That confusion soon turned to anger for Zyanna's parents. ABC-7 is told the watch was purchased from an east El Paso Target store earlier this month.

"It hurts me because she is my daughter," said Billy Rivera. "When she hurts, my wife and I hurt. It is devastating." The Apple Watch is worth about $500. The family said along with the gift, they were also given the receipt to prove it.

Target's stores and customer service call lines were all closed for the holiday on Wednesday but Billy Rivera said he intends to be back at the store in search of answers first thing Thursday morning.

  1. Sad! I had a similar incident several years ago on Ft Bliss. I bought my wife a digital camera at the PX, and a unit’s wives’ club was doing gift wrapping. Someone took out the camera and replaced it with a stapler. We didn’t know until she opened the present.
