El Paso leaders discuss city budget, virus impact

City of El Paso

EL PASO, Texas -- City of El Paso leadership held a roundtable discussion with the media Thursday afternoon about the ongoing impact of Covid-19 to the city's financial condition.

City Manager Tommy Gonzalez and Chief Financial Officer Robert Cortinas offered reporters a glimpse at the city budget for fiscal year 2021 ahead of next week’s budget discussions by City Council.

Mayor Dee Margo has previously said a $33 million budget shortfall this fiscal year could be as high as $100 million when the new fiscal year starts in September. The city also has furloughed roughly 450 city workers during the pandemic.
