Potholes, rocks & debris litter El Paso streets after recent heavy rains

EL PASO, Texas -- El Paso's Streets and Maintenance Department is seeing a high volume of potholes across the city, as well as large amounts of debris in the roadways, after large amounts of rainfall brought to region in recent storms.

Salvador Solis, the infrastructure division manager for the city, said Wednesday that the amount of maintenance requests on potholes around the city is in the hundreds and climbing.

“Right now we are just focusing on hazardous situations where we want to provide a safe passage for motorists and pedestrians," Solis explained.

That means that people in residential areas with potholes and scattered debris will have to wait until the more heavily trafficked areas are fixed first.

“Whenever it rains, we prepare to see what I’m seeing right now, and do the clean up," said central El Paso resident Manuel Valencia.

Valencia had a large accumulation of rocks and mud in front of his driveway thanks to the recent storms. The water also washed away some of his landscaping rocks. On Wednesday, he was cleaning up his sidewalk area as cars drove by on large rocks out in the street.

“I’m a little frustrated because it’s kind of hot and then to be doing this (cleanup) right now," Valencia said.

The city does not want people to go out in the middle of busy streets to clean up the debris. Solis said you can clean up your sidewalk area or call 311 and report a problem to the city.
