El Paso Rep. Trejo recall petition signatures turned in to City Hall

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- A petition to recall El Paso City Representative Cynthia Boyar Trejo has been turned in to City Hall Friday, according to Josh Dagda, who led the petition.

Volunteers gathered signatures since June 17 and submitted more than 1,000. They're looking to recall Rep. Trejo over her decision to vote against canceling the 380 agreement the city has with Meta for the Northeast data center.

A 380 agreement is a legal contract between a city and a private business. One of the things it does is incentivize developers to build a project in a specific city so they have the opportunity for economic growth.

The city clerk said the petition would need 4,233 signatures to recall her, but volunteers argued it should be 786.

Dagda said he wants a fair resolution.

"They did not feel heard, so we wanted to do something about it," Dagda said.

ABC-7 reached out to the City of El Paso for comment. It sent the following statement.

The City Clerk’s Office did receive the recall petition and signatures today and the Clerk’s Office now has up to 10 calendar days to validate the signatures. If the petition is sufficient, it will be submitted to City Council, which must order a recall election if the representative does not resign. If the petition is insufficient, the organizers will have 10 calendar days to amend it, followed by another 10-day review period.

If the petition is valid, it will be submitted to the El Paso City Council. If Rep. Trejo doesn't resign, the council would call for a recall election.
