EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chose El Paso to build its 10th temple in Texas, according to a news release.

The First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints plans to build the temple at the corner of Northern Pass Drive and Paso del Norte Boulevard in Northwest El Paso.

The church said the temple will be a single-story building spanning 22,300 square feet.

Temples of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints differ from meetinghouses or chapels where members meet for Sunday services. Meetinghouses are used for worship services and weekday activities. They are open to the general public.

Temples are "special places of worship" for sacred ceremonies, the church said. When a temple is first built, it briefly opens for public tours. Once dedicated, attendance is reserved for "faithful members of the Church."

The El Paso Texas Temple was first announced in October 2024, according to the church. It will be the 10th temple in the state. Other temples have been built in Dallas, Houston, Lubbock, San Antonio and McAllen.
