EL PASO, Texas - A long-time veteran of non-profit organizations has been named the new chief executive officer for the Humane Society of El Paso.

Deb Benedict has held executive positions with the Center Against Sexual and Family Violence and the Sexual Trauma and Assault Response Services (STARS). Benedict was hired after a year-long search following the firing of executive director Luke Westerman in January 2019.

In a statement, Elke Cumming, the chairman of the Humane Society of El Paso's board of directors said, "(Our) search lead us to one of the most trusted and well-respected figures who has a demonstrated track record of success in our community. We’re all eager to welcome Deb to the Humane Society of El Paso and are eager to support her as she builds upon her sterling legacy of leadership.”

Benedict appeared on ABC-7 at Four to talk about her new role.
