AUSTIN, Texas — The state of Texas reported over 5,500 patients in the hospital for coronavirus on Saturday – that's 16 consecutive days of record-high hospitalizations.

Confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Texas also continued to surge on Saturday, with the state reporting 5,747 new cases.

A day earlier, Gov. Greg Abbott shut down bars again and scaled back restaurant dining as cases climbed to record levels after the state embarked on one of America’s fastest re-openings. He admitted in an ABC-7 interview to letting bars re-open too soon.

The Texas Department of State Health Services said the new number of cases reported Saturday brought the state’s total to 143,371 confirmed cases.

The number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.

Also Saturday, health officials said 42 more deaths were reported from the virus, bringing the state’s total to 2,366.

Texas had surpassed 5,000 hospitalizations for the first time on Friday with 5,102 hospitalizations. But health officials said Saturday that the number of people hospitalized had now risen to 5,523.

Hospitalizations also reached a record high of 121 Saturday in El Paso, which saw nearly 1,000 new confirmed cases this week.

Texas is scrambling to contain what is now one of the nation’s biggest hotspots. Abbott has also ordered rafting and tubing outfitters on Texas’ popular rivers to close and required outdoor gatherings of 100 people or more to seek approval from local governments.

Abbott began lifting lockdown orders in May and has since accelerated his own timelines on some openings amid protests from conservatives.

Texas reached a record high positive tests of 5,996 on Thursday.

    1. You don’t have the sand to call out the protesters but call out who you consider conservatives. At least call out Blm who rioted in the streets and gathered with no masks or distancing. These huge spikes came right AFTER the blm protests and you cannot deny it. There was no huge spike like this after mother’s day, memorial day, lake of the ozarks, florida beaches opening, california beaches opening, nope these “record breaking” numbers started right after the riots but somehow this fact remains UNREPORTED.

    2. Alberto is the pendejo of El Paso. He hates the white half of himself. One side wants to wear a face mask and the other doesn’t. I bet he looks like Harley Quinn. lmao.
