HOBBS, New Mexico (KVIA) -- A Hobbs mother has been found guilty of first-degree attempted murder Friday in connection to abandoning her baby into a dumpster when she was a teenager, according to ABC affiliate KOAT.

Alexis Avila faces up to 18 years. Her sentencing hearing is set for May 1.

Last year, Avila pleaded not guilty to abandoning her newborn hours after giving birth.

She says she didn't know she was pregnant until the day before.

The child was placed in the care of the New Mexico Department of Children, Youth and Families.
