Wild On Ice, winner of Sunland Park Derby, euthanized weeks after win

Update: The owner of Wild on Ice confirms to ABC-7 that the racehorse was euthanized Thursday morning. It suffered a hairline fracture, putting it at higher risk for a full break.

SUNLAND PARK, New Mexico -- The winner of this year's Sunland Derby, Wild On Ice, will miss the Kentucky Derby after a leg injury this morning.

Wile On Ice was an underdog and won the main event at the 18th running of the Sunland Derby back in March.

Wild on Ice at 35-1 odds snuck past the other six horses and won the race down the straight.

According to the El Paso Times, he was injured at Churchill Downs and has been euthanized.

The Kentucky Derby is set for Saturday May 6th, 2023.
