Police investigating suspicious death after body found near Magoffin fire

UPDATE (April 21, 2026) -- The El Paso Police Department on Tuesday said it's investigating a suspicious death after finding a man's body in the same area a fire burned on 1314 Magoffin Ave.

The body was found at 1306 Magoffin Ave, EPPD said. The body has not been identified.

Police said a demolition surveyor found the body inside one of the buildings that burned and called police.

Investigators are asking for information about the death. You can call the non-emergency EPPD line at (915) 832-4400.

UPDATE (April 20, 2026) -- The El Paso Police Department says human remains were found Monday during debris removal operations.

According to EPPD, contractors discovered the remains of an unknown male.

The Crimes Against Persons unit was called in and is now investigating.


UPDATE (April 20, 2026) -- The El Paso Fire Department said the cause of the fire was arson.

Two buildings were damaged. A house was a "total loss," EPFD said. It said the fire started in the back of the house's patio and spread to the second building.

Firefighters knocked the fire down within an hour, EPFD said. In total, 50 firefighters extinguished the fire.

Nobody was in the buildings. EPFD said no injuries were reported.


UPDATE (1:50 PM-- 4/19/26) -- A spokesperson for the El Paso Fire Department said the fire is being investigated by officials as arson.

The spokesperson said that the investigation continues.


UPDATE (9:00 a.m.) -- A spokesperson for the El Paso Fire Department said that firefighters were able to get the fire under control just before 10 p.m. Saturday.

Battalion Chief Kris Menendez told ABC 7 that firefighters were able to get water on the fire within five minutes at the initial two story structure but strong winds spread the flames to a second residence nearby.

A total of 37 units and around 50 firefighters as well as officers from the El Paso Police Department responded to the fire, Battalion Chief Menendez told ABC-7.

According to EPFD, several people were evacuated as a precaution and there were no injuries.

Battalion Chief Menendez told ABC-7 that one person is displaced due to the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Once more information is provided, we will update you on air and online.


EL PASO, Texas (KVIA)--A massive fire broke out in South El Paso, according to the El Paso Fire Department. The department reported it as a condition four fire.

Fire crews responded to the scene at 1314 Magoffin, where heavy flames and smoke were visible. We have a crew heading to the scene.

Authorities have not reported any injuries at this time.
