Get ahead of Labor Day Weekend travel rush; air fare prices increase this year
The Labor Day Weekend travel rush is expected to begin on Thursday.
El Paso International Airport usually isn't one of the airports you have to worry, but most flights from here have connecting flights to some of the busiest airports like Denver, Atlanta, Houston and more.
AAA says Labor Day Weekend is usually five days long, starting this Thursday to Monday, September 7.
Fuel prices have been increasing this year and AAA says domestic airfare is more expensive overall this labor day, with about a 2-3% increase in prices.
However, if you're flying to one of the more popular destinations like Seattle, Boston, Orlando, Denver or New York, or those in Texas like Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin, flyers can see much bigger increases — nearly 20% higher compared to last year.
But, AAA says that's not stopping people from taking a vacation.
"Crude oil prices continue to be something of concern, but also you have a lot of people traveling," says Daniel Armbruster, AAA Texas/New Mexico spokesperson. "We're seeing another record year for traveling. Despite higher prices, people are still prioritizing travel."
AAA says anytime you have a big holiday weekend, expect busy airports.
Earlier flights usually have the advantage because there are more options to reschedule if flights get delayed or canceled.
We're also at a time of year where weather has an impact, according to AAA.
So look at the weather in El Paso, the location of your connecting airports, and your final destination.
They also suggest downloading your airlines app to stay up to date on any changes to your flight schedule.
As always, get there early — if you have a domestic flight, get there at least two hours before your boarding time.
"Don't schedule an important event immediately after your planned arrival, a little cushion can make a difference," says Armbruster. "If a flight is delayed or canceled, the last thing you want to do is panic. You're going to get there eventually."
