Britain has imposed sanctions on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, his son and six others over crackdown

LONDON (AP) — Britain and Canada have imposed sanctions on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, his son and other senior government officials following the disputed presidential election and a violent crackdown on protesters in Belarus. The two countries said they acted together to ensure the sanctions have a greater impact and “to demonstrate unity in our condemnation of the situation.” The British measures include a travel ban and asset freeze on eight individuals from the Belarusian government. Similar sanctions were imposed by Canada. The British government said Lukashenko is the first leader to have been sanctioned under Britain’s new global human rights sanctions regime, which was introduced in July.
