DEA agent killed, 2 others hurt in shooting on Amtrak train slated to stop in El Paso
TUCSON, Arizona -- A DEA agent was killed and another agent along with a Tucson police officer were seriously injured after someone opened fire Monday aboard an Amtrak train in Tucson, ABC affiliate KGUN reported.
The shooting happened Monday just after 8 a.m. on a train parked at the downtown station.
Authorities told KGUN that officers were conducting a routine interdiction check and had detained one person on the second level of the double-decker car, when another person opened fire on the officers.
A TPD officer heard the shots, ran into the conflict and was shot; he was hospitalized in serious but stable condition. The injured DEA agent was also hospitalized in serious condition.
The suspect who fired at officers barricaded himself into a bathroom and later died, KGUN reported.
Authorities said there was no more threat and an Amtrak spokesman added there were no reported injuries to the crew or passengers.
Passengers said after hearing shots had been fired, they huddled together before police told them to flee.
The Sunset Limited train was traveling from Los Angeles to New Orleans with 137 passengers and 11 crew members. It was scheduled to stop in El Paso after Tucson.
