Community Champions: Las Cruces cheer team wins state title

EL PASO, Texas - The Las Cruces High School cheer team overcame a lot of obstacles in route to winning a state title.

From injuries, to exposure to Covid-19, the team banded together to bring home the 6th state title in cheerleading to Las Cruces.

It was back in May that the Bulldawgs won the New Mexico Activities Association State Spirit Championships.

Erika Carranza is the team's head coach.

A Mayfield graduate, Carranza has lead the Bulldawgs to three of those six state titles in cheerleading.

"It was definitely quite the challenge, but these kids were up for it." Carranza said. "They were sitting at home for so long just waiting for that call to have practice. They gained value in just that simple practice time because we realized just how quickly life can change with this pandemic and shutdown."

For their accomplishments this season, the Las Cruces cheer team has been named this week's Community Champions.

Community Champions is sponsored by Albertsons and the El Paso Community Foundation.
