Community Champions: Americas softball team headed to state final four this week

EL PASO, Texas - The Americas Trail Blazers are certainly blazing new trails, and it's a trail they hope will lead to a state title.

Thursday morning, the Americas softball team boarded a plane for Austin, TX, the site of the 6A state softball tournament final four.

The Blazers will face Northside O'Connor High School, Friday in the semi-finals of the tournament.

First-pitch for that game is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.

It will be a tough matchup for Americas, as O'Connor only has one loss on its record this season, and is currently ranked 6th nationally.

Wednesday, the school held a sendoff celebration for the Americas softball team.

Americas is just the second softball team from El Paso to make it to the final four of the state softball playoffs in nearly 30 years.

Bel Air was the first back in 1994.

For all their accomplishments this season, the Americas softball team has been named this week's Community Champions.

Community Champions is sponsored by Albertsons and the El Paso Community Foundation.
