El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2022: Wright Stanton III

EL PASO, Texas - Wright Stanton III didn't know how to swim, but he didn't let that stop him from trying to learn.

Stanton III taught himself, and it was that decision that led him to a career worthy of induction into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame.

With a relentless determination and teaching lessons from his teammates, Stanton III became a lifeguard, water safety Instructor, and a member of an all-black swim team in Virginia.

Stanton III then dedicated his life to teaching and sharing his knowledge about swimming with others.

He ended up in El Paso coaching several swim clubs in the city.

The swimmers who learned from Stanton III ended up finding success of their own either at the club level, high school, college, even internationally.

He continues to be an inspiration to many not only for his success in swimming, but for his dedication to helping and serving his community.

Stanton III still swims to this day as he competes in senior games, and is also a member of the Senior Games Hall of Fame.

Now Stanton III will enter another hall of fame, the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony is June 22 and will be livestreamed at kvia.com.
