El Paso’s Ivan Melendez wins Golden Spikes Award

EL PASO, Texas - It's officially, official.

Ivan Melendez is the best college baseball player in 2022.

Friday, the former Coronado Thunderbird was named this year's Golden Spikes Award winner.

The Golden Spikes Award is the equivalent of college football's Heisman Trophy, but for baseball.

For the last two seasons Melendez has played for the Texas Longhorns.

This past season Melendez led the nation in both home runs (32) and RBIs (94).

He becomes the first player from the University of Texas to win the Golden Spikes Award.

The 22-year-old redshirt junior helped the Longhorns reach the College World Series, where they were eliminated with losses to Notre Dame and Texas A&M.
