===Chapter 11: Wrestling

Wrestling

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) first started awarding state championships in wrestling during the 1998-1999 academic year (the first titles were awarded in 1999) although Texas athletes had participated in the sport for many years before that. Several El Paso high schools have had teams (both boys and girls) that have competed well at the state tournament but none have won a UIL championship. The previous statement was true until the Hanks High School girls’ wrestling team won the UIL Texas 4A State Girls’ Wrestling Championship on February 15, 2014. The Hanks girls’ team now becomes the first team from El Paso to win a UIL team state championship in the sport of wrestling. Prior to the impressive performance by the Hank High School girls, the Eastwood High School boys had come the closest to winning a state championship when the Troopers finished 2nd in the team rankings in 2000. The Hanks High School girls had also previously finished second twice before. The top schools in El Paso have been Hanks High School, Eastwood High School, Franklin High School, Chapin High School, Burges High School, Ysleta High School, Montwood High School, Del Valle High School, Jefferson High School, and Irvin High School. Athletes from El Paso have performed well, on a yearly basis, at the annual meet and many have brought home gold medals. This chapter will cover both boys and girls wrestling on a team basis, but primarily on an individual basis. I will give special recognition to wrestlers that have medaled at the state tournament. My resource for this chapter has been uiltexas.org unless otherwise noted.

  Notice that I said that no team before the Hanks girls of 2014 and 2015 had won a UIL team championship. The El Paso area had a proud wrestling heritage prior to the UIL becoming the sanctioning body in 1999. Burges High School won four THSCA (Texas High School Coaches Association) team titles in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. The Mustangs were also state runner-ups six times through 1993. Burges won titles in 1977, 1979, 1980, and 1982. The Mustangs were runner ups in 1975, 1976, 1978, 1981, 1991, and 1993. Jesse Almodovar, the current wrestling coach at Franklin High School, was a Burges wrestler from 1988-1991. He won an individual state championship in 1991 and was part of the ’91 Mustang team that finished second in the state. Burges was coached by legendary wrestling coach Rick Ortega for part of those years. Ortega left El Paso and became the head coach at St. Marks in Dallas, Texas. Ortega took that program to unparalleled heights and was ranked as the 3rd most successful wrestling coach in the United States when he retired in 2012. Yancey Natividad, a former student of mine at Bowie High School, sent me a wonderful website, epmatroom.com, that list all of the El Paso areas former champions and championship teams for the 1970’s until present. The site is run by Coach Almodovar. I will include the titles that I found at the end of this chapter. I am grateful for their assistance.

I will cover the history of the El Paso area high schools in depth in the next few pages but I believe that the impressive performance by Hanks High School deserves to be placed ahead of all other records.

2014 Hanks High School Girls Win UIL Texas 4A Wrestling State Championship

February 15th, 2014 marked an important date in the history of El Paso sports. Hanks High School became the first school to win a team state championship in the sport of wrestling when the girls from Hanks won the 4A UIL Texas State Championship. The Lady Knights had also finished runner-up in the state on two previous occasions (2002 and 2005). Hanks scored 114.5 to outscore runner-up Amarillo Caprock’s 105 points. Hanks was led by the gold medal performances of Adrienne Holguin at the 148 pound weight classification and by Daniela Flores at the 128 pound weight classification. Briana Holcomb’s 3rd place finish at 138 pounds and Gisselle Escobedo’s 5th place performance at 95 pounds were equally important in winning the state title for Hanks. The Lady Knights entered the day’s competition in second place trailing Caprock by 11.5 points but picked up the all important points earned by Holcomb and Escobedo during the consolation matches. Those points set the stage for Holguin and Flores. Flores said,” It’s something that’s just awesome. I feel awesome right now and all the hard work paid off. I wrestled McDaniel (Janae McDaniel of Caprock) three times. I actually wrestled her at the regionals and I beat her, but anything could happen. I really went in there with my head up. I knew who I am and I won it.” Flores won the match by pinning McDaniel. Adrienne Holguin had pinned her opponent earlier in the competition and said after the final match,” It feels amazing. Just seeing the girls excel at everything they do. They work so hard at practice. To get this win, and tha417th)t trophy, we put all our effort into it. Giving 100 percent and seeing all our hard work paid off.” Coach Tony Carter (who is in his first year as Hank’s wrestling coach) stated, “Man, there are no words to describe it. These girls worked hard all year. They did a great job.” I will have more to say about Hanks when I do my recap of the performances of El Paso schools and El Paso athletes for 2014.

Rebekah Cordova and Shania Villalba won silver medals in their matches to help secure the title. Giselle Escobedo placed 4th in her weight division and Ana Colon placed fifth to round out the scoring for the Knights.

Wrestling Championships prior to 1999

El Paso area high schools had a rich tradition in wrestling prior to UIL sanctioning in 1999. I knew that Burges, Irvin, and Eastwood had won state titles when THSCA was the governing body of high school wrestling but I couldn’t find any documentation. I was finally sent the documentation I needed in the form of the website EPMATROOM.COM. I am indebted to Yancey Natividad, a former student of mine at Bowie High School, and Coach Jesse Almodovar, current wrestling coach at Franklin High School and former state champion, for their assistance. I am now going to list the teams and individuals that have won THSCA state championships. The website list all the state finishers for each year but for the sake of brevity I am only going to list championship winners.
