UTEP stays close to Michigan despite halftime deficit

ANN ARBOR, Mich -- UTEP is within striking distance of No. 19 Michigan at halftime, trailing the Wolverines 17-14 Saturday afternoon at Michigan Stadium.

The Miners came out fast, taking an early lead behind quarterback EJ Colson Jr.

Colson connected with Carver Cheeks on a 45-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to give UTEP a 7-0 advantage.

Michigan answered in the second quarter with a 6-yard touchdown run from Savion Hiter to tie the game.

UTEP regained the lead later in the quarter when Colson found Lamar Sperling for an 18-yard touchdown, putting the Miners ahead 14-7.

Michigan responded with a touchdown pass from quarterback Bryce Underwood to JJ Buchanan, tying the game at 14-14. The Wolverines then took their first lead of the afternoon on a 48-yard field goal from T.J. Butkowski with five seconds remaining in the half.

Colson has been efficient through the first two quarters, completing all six of his passes for 82 yards and two touchdowns.

Michigan has controlled more of the overall yardage, holding a 216-122 advantage, but UTEP has avoided turnovers while the Wolverines have lost two fumbles.

The Miners will look to reclaim the lead in the second half as they continue their road matchup against the 19th-ranked Wolverines.
