WATCH: EPPD says Cielo Vista Mall shooting was “random” incident between two groups

UPDATE: Cielo Vista Mall issued this statement on the day following the shooting:

While the El Paso Police Department investigation is ongoing, the Chief of Police did stress that this was a random, isolated incident stemming from an altercation between two groups in a tenant space near the food court. We are thankful for the quick response of the El Paso Police Officer stationed in the center, mall security as well as the broader support of the El Paso Police Department and other responding agencies. While the incident is isolated and there is no ongoing concern to shoppers, tenants and mall staff, we are increasing our security presence in the mall out an abundance of caution.

UPDATE 2:51 p.m.: El Paso police say they've begun to release vehicles and property left at the scene from yesterday's shooting. You are asked to enter the mall from the south entrance from Gateway West.

An officer will guide you through the process. Please bring your vehicle keys and photo ID.

UPDATE 12 p.m.: Interim Police Chief Peter Pacillas says one person is dead, 3 others are shot.

He called it a "random" incident between two groups at the mall. The confrontation took place in the food court area, and that is where it was isolated to.

During that encounter, a fight took place. During the fight, one person pulled out a handgun and shots were fired. Two people in group B were wounded and taken to a local hospital.

One member of group A was shot and died at the scene. Another member of group A was also injured.

The three victims are still recovering in the hospital.

Preliminary information is that there were at least three people legally armed with handguns in the area of the incident.

Police officials told ABC-7, the incident was not gang-related. Pacillas says the age range of those involved is late teens to early 20s.

Pacillas says no officers were injured, and no officers discharged their weapons during the incident.

Pacillas says this is an active investigation. The vehicles at the scene will be released around 1 or 1:30 p.m. FBI is still helping with the web page.

Pacillas say the response by officers working off duty at the mall helped mitigate the situation.
