ABC-7 First Alert: Haboob hits the Borderland; air quality unhealthy

Thunderstorm outflow winds this evening coming out of Mexico kicked the winds up with gusts over 50 mph with blowing dust and sand. The air quality fell to "unhealthy" across the Borderland and will likely stay that way through midnight before it improves overnight. A few sprinkles fell in spots but most of the area stayed dry and dusty. This current dust event was the 30th of the year so far - we average 20 per year.

El Paso also recorded another triple digit day hitting 100. This was our 52nd triple of the year so far - we average 27. El Paso also tied the most triple digit days for the month of August at 20. We recorded this same number in 2020.

Tuesday

Thunderstorm chances remain possible Tuesday afternoon, especially near and east of the Rio Grande. Southwestern New Mexico should be somewhat drier compared with today. Temperatures will remain warm, with highs generally in the mid to upper 90s.

Wednesday

A rebuilding ridge should reduce storm coverage, especially east of the Rio Grande. However, some moisture will begin returning to southwestern New Mexico, keeping isolated storm chances in the forecast.

Late Week

Moisture increases again late in the week as the western trough pushes farther inland. Thunderstorm chances are expected to rise from Thursday through at least Saturday.
