Doña Ana County, Otero Prison have 2 of New Mexico’s 8 new virus deaths; Doña Ana tops 1,000 cases
SANTA FE, New Mexico -- A woman in her 90s from Doña Ana County and a man in his 50s at the Otero County Prison were among eight new coronavirus deaths in New Mexico on Friday, raising the state's fatality count to 511.
The Doña Ana County victim had been a resident of the Jim Wood Home in Hatch, which state health officials had previously identified among nursing homes with virus outbreaks. It was Doña Ana County's tenth virus death.
The Otero prison death involved a federal inmate who had recently been hospitalized. That detention facility is among two in Otero County that are responsible for a huge virus infestation that infected hundreds. He was the fifth prison inmate to die and the seventh overall death in Otero County.
The state posted an additional 257 virus cases Friday, bringing the total across New Mexico to date to 12,776.
Doña Ana County was among the top three counties in the state for new infections, behind Bernalillo (55) and McKinley (42), recording 40 on Friday. That took Doña Ana's cumulative case count over the 1,000 mark to 1,039.
In Otero County, there were seven new cases reported among residents to raise their total caseload to 51. There were also three new cases at the Otero County Prison and one new case at the adjacent Otero County ICE Processing Center. Those two federally-operated facilities are responsible for a combined 871 infections so far; detainee and inmate cases are counted separately from those of county residents.
