EL PASO, Texas -- El Paso city Rep. Peter Svarzbein is taking on a new role as deputy state director in Texas for Democrat Michael Bloomberg’s campaign for president.

Svarzbein confirmed the new role with ABC-7 on Wednesday evening, saying "while other candidates are focused on early states, Mike is focused on Texas and Texans, including El Paso. I am proud to be part of this team."

His announcement comes as Bloomberg’s campaign said it has plans to open an office in El Paso by the end of the month, but there's no word yet on where the office will be located.

Svarzbein represents District 1 on El Paso City Council and said he doesn't plan on resigning from his elected position.
