Keeping your pet safe during the Fourth of July holiday

EL PASO, Texas -- It might be your favorite sight during the Fourth of July holiday, but chances are you pet is not a fan of fireworks.

The loud booms going off can make dogs anxious at times causing dogs to run off. During this time of the year, shelters see influx in animals especially after the Fourth.

So to help prevent that and keep your dogs safe here are a couple tips to keep in mind:

• Keep your pets inside.
• Try to create a safe space for them with toys and activities to keep them busy
• Play white noise or calming music to help drown out the noise
• Make sure your pets are wearing a collar
• Make sure your pets are microchipped and has updated information.

Kristen Gurrola with the Humane Society of El Paso says the biggest mistake and most preventable measure you can take this weekend is to never leave your pets unattended outside.

"Even if it could be for a quick potty break, try to stay out there for that those quick 5 to 10 minutes or whatever it takes for them to do their business. In that time, even though they're not usually jumpers, if something goes off and it spooks them enough, the adrenaline can get them going enough to actually jump out even though they never really have in the past."

"If your animals do get lost, try to make it a point to go out and find them check the shelters check Animal Services. That way, they're not just adding into the numbers of animals that they're already having to take care of," Gurrola said.
