Food City Supermarket Fox Plaza location to close permanently in August
EL PASO, Texas -- After 50 years, Food City Supermarket located at Fox Plaza will be shutting its doors.
Store officials made the announcement Tuesday morning via social media. They thanked their customers in the post.
The family has been in the business since 1964 when the patriarch opened the first location on South Stanton St.
The Fox Plaza location first opened 50 years ago in 1972. Three generations of the family worked there.
Officials said Tuesday they had to make the difficult decision to downsize the family business from three locations to only two.
Back in February, ABC-7 spoke with store officials who were already struggling with staffing shortages and supply chain issues.
Store officials were forced to reduce hours and cut out staple items from the menu.
Officials said it was because they didn't have enough workers for a full kitchen crew.
Additionally, the store had to increase prices for items in the bakery and deli departments because of the price hike for raw materials and employee wages.
The grocery store is known for its flour tortillas, Mexican pastries, tamales and other food items.
Other locations that will remain open include the one on 7444 Gateway East/Hunter and 3200 Alameda.
The Fox Plaza location will close in August.
