El Paso International Airport receives $5 million for improvements to terminals, energy efficiency, and accessibility
EL PASO, Texas -- The El Paso International Airport (ELP) received five million dollars from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration to improve terminals, energy efficiency, and accessibility Thursday.
Specifically, the funds will be used to replace ceiling panels, add energy-efficient lighting, and new passenger seating that not only provides device charging but also improves Americans with Disabilities Act access.
The project at ELP is part of a larger series of grants awarded to 85 airports nationwide with the purpose of expanding terminal capacity, increasing energy efficiency, promoting competition, and providing greater accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
Funding comes from the Airport Terminal Program, which is one of three aviation programs created by the Biden Administration's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, also known as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The law provides one billion dollars each year for five years for airport terminal grants.
“Americans deserve modern airports that meet the needs of their families and growing passenger demand," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, "Today’s grants will improve airport terminals while also creating good jobs in communities across the country."
