1 dead, 2 injured after SUV slams into semi-truck on I-10 at Loop 375
EL PASO, Texas -- One man was killed and two others were hurt when an SUV slammed into a semi-truck along Interstate 10 west at the Loop 375 north interchange late Monday night.
Police and fire officials indicated two men were outside assisting the driver of a semi that was stopped on the ramp about 10 p.m. That's when an SUV that had been "weaving in and out of lanes" crashed into the semi and a pickup parked in front of it, which then struck the men.
"Both were thrown off the overpass and fell approximately four stories," said police Sgt. Enrique Carrillo.
A witness told ABC-7 that first responders arrived to find the two men lying on the ground; police on Tuesday identified them as 35-year-old Carlos Lechuga and 33-year-old Hector Mendoza.
The other injured man was the SUV driver, whom police identified as 24-year-old Martin Castaneda.
The trio were taken to Del Sol Hospital, where Lechuga died Tuesday morning. Mendoza was still hospitalized Tuesday afternoon with serious injuries, while Castaneda also remained hospitalized for injuries that police said were "not believed to be life-threatening."
There was no word from investigators as to whether Castaneda would face any charges stemming from the deadly crash.
