Saying no to anti-semitism
EL PASO, Texas-- Kanye West, Kyrie Irving, and other public figures have recently made anti-semitic comments on their social media platforms reaching millions of people. El Paso Rabbi Benjamin Zeidman and City Representative Peter Svarzbain worry about how people on social media are interpreting these messages.
Rabbi Zeidman said this is nothing new as the Jewish religion has been used as a scapegoat for problems in society for thousands of years. He reiterated the importance of having conversations with people to learn and to be better.
City Representative Peter Svarzbain, a grandson of a Holocaust survivor, is troubled that this type of anti-semitism is still being portrayed in the 21st century, as the same type of derogatory rhetoric led to one of the worst genocides in the 20th century.
Both hope that these threats on synagogues across the country antisemitic comments made on social media will not scare people of the Jewish religion from attending their weekly service, and have no doubt, as they have in the past, they will stick together through tough times.
