ABC-7 Sunday Xtra, the rise in school threats and how it’s impacting education

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- It's enough to send teriffying thoughts through any parent's mind: receiving an alert text from their child's school about a school threat.

Unfortunately, it's become an all too familiar scene.

Multiple law enforcement agencies converge on school grounds following reports of threats, either of someone with a weapon or, worse yet, a bomb.

The school is placed under lockdown while officers and agents scour the school investigating.
Students wait for the all-clear, while parents rush to their child's school helplessly, waiting for any nugget of information.

According to FBI statistics, threats to area schools have increased by 60% this school year.
And it's happening across the city.

Pebble Hills High School and Franklin High School received threats within a month.

Sunday on ABC 7 Xtra, host Saul Saenz speaks with police chiefs and administrators from both Socorro and El Paso Independent School Districts.

They identify what sort of threats they receive and what they are doing to help students feel safe at school and make parents confident about sending their children to school.
