High School Track and Field: who is going to State?

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- At least eight El Paso area high school athletes have qualified for individual events at the State track and field tournament with four relay teams also punching their ticket at the Region meet.

The State Meet will be held in Austin, Texas from Thursday, May 11 - Saturday, May 13.

Class 6A

Luis Pastor - Coronado

Texas commit Luis Pastor will head to his future home of Austin and compete in both the 3200 and 1600.

Pastor won the 3200 on Friday with a time of 9:05. On Saturday he won the 1600 with a time of 4:13.65.

Franklin Boys 4x100

The Cougars relay team finished 3rd with a time of 41.60 but will go to State as a wild card team because they had the best time across Texas that didn't finish top 2 at Regionals.

The team is made up of Beau Sparks, Julian Mars, Gerald Williams and Jordan Morales.

Class 5A

Ricardo Leyva - Horizon

Ricardo Leyva placed 1st in Region 1 5A high jump after clearing the bar at 6' 11".

Morgan Little - Chapin

Husky standout athlete Morgan Little qualified for State for two individual events. She placed 2nd in long jump with a jump of 19' 8" and won the 100 meters with a time of 11.59.

Seth Truax - Chapin

Seth Truax punched his ticket to State thanks to a 2nd place finish in the boys 800 meters with a time of 1:57.04

Chapin Girls 4x100

The Huskies 100m relay team placed 3rd at Regionals but will go to State as the Wild Card because their time of 47.13 was the fastest across Texas that didn't finish top 2 at Regionals. The team consists of Samahdi Foster, Caidence Johnson, Maliyah Pride and Morgan Little.

Chapin Girls 4x200

The Huskies 200m relay team placed 2nd at Regionals. Their 200m team is the exact same as their 100m team. Little will be competing in four events at State.

Parkland Boys 4x200

Kaleb Martinez, DJ Crest, Joseph Gomez and Lincoln Jurado combined to finish 3rd in the 4x200 meters with a time of 1:27.06. They will go to State as the 5A Wild Card team.

Class 4A

Jose Guardado and Angel 'Speedy' Munoz - Riverside

The Quarterback and Running Back duo of Angel 'Speedy' Munoz and Jose Guardado are headed to State in long jump. Jose won the event with a jump of 22' 9" which was also a personal best. Speedy came 2nd with a jump of 22' 6.5".

Christopher Moreno - San Elizario

Christopher Moreno will look to defend his 800 meter State Title from last year after he won the 800 meters at Region on Saturday. Moreno will also compete in the 1600m at State after he placed 2nd in the event at Region.

Class 3A

Daniel Romero - Tornillo

Daniel Romero will compete in two events at State. Romero qualified for the 1600 meters (4:27.32) and the 3200 meters (9:37.48) after finishing 2nd in both of them.
