The lone remaining player from last season’s NMSU roster enters the portal
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (KVIA) -- It's now official, new NMSU men's basketball head coach Jason Hooten will start his campaign with a completely new roster.
Sunday Anthony Roy entered the transfer portal, according to verbal commits.
Roy was the lone remaining player from the 2022-23 roster who hadn't either entered the portal, announced their intention to turn pro or graduated.
Hooten told ABC-7 it wasn't necessarily his intention to start a fresh but did think starting over for everyone involved might be for the best.
The former head coach of Sam Houston is now tasked with building a roster from scratch.
"When you tell people that they laugh and they really can't believe that we're about to rebuild a team," Hooten said. "But in this day and age with the portal and all those kind of things, it's not easy but you do have a chance to do that and a put a goof team on the floor right away and that will be our plan."
The Aggies so far have announced the signing of three players:
- Keylon Dorsey, a freshman guard who had committed to Sam Houston and followed Hooton to NMSU
- Jaden Harris, a junior guard who is transferring from JUCO
- Clarence 'Monzy' Jackson, a senior forward who played at both Wichita State and Jacksonville State
Late Sunday Stephen F. Austin Guard Jaylin Jackson-Posey announced on his instagram that he has committed to NMSU. The sophomore guard played in 31 games as a freshman and scored 7.5 points and had 2.5 rebounds per game.
That leaves nine more scholarship spots for Hooten and the Aggies to fill.
