Community Champions: YWLA athlete becomes first student to sign with college

EL PASO, Texas - A high school senior at the Young Women's Leadership Academy made history on Tuesday.

Jeannette Rivera is a member of the YWLA's track and field team.

Tuesday, she signed her letter of intent to compete at Western New Mexico.

She became the first athlete from YWLA to ever sign on to continue her athletic career in college.

Rivera is a sprinter who competes in the 400m and 800m.

She said when she first got into competitive running, she wasn't very good.

But Rivera continued to work hard to improve her times, and she found some success on the track.

She qualified for area and regional competitions.

Now she has her sights set on doing well at the next level.

For all of her accomplishments, Rivera is this week's Community Champion.
