Mexican Police Officer Allegedly Kills U.S. Tourist In Juarez

EL PASO, TX. -ABC-7 uncovers new detailsabout the New Mexico woman allegedly shot by a Chihuahua State Policeman on Saturday. Sources at thomason hospitaltell ABC-7 thatthe woman is “not dead,” as previously reported, but in critical condition.

The woman is identified as 29-year-old Maria Elena Guerra. El Diario de Juarez reports the woman was riding in a truck with friends in Palomas,across the border from Columbus (NM)when a police officer stopped them.

The officer says he somehow lost his footing and accidentally fired his gun, hitting the woman. An attorney for the driver of the truck disputes that story. The officer has reportedly been jailed until the investigation is finished.

Ms. Guerra was airlifted to Thomason Hospital early Saturday morning. She had been in Mexico, with friends, celebrating a birthday party.
