Red Cross Stockpiling Supplies For Evacuees
EL PASO, TX– The local chapter of the American Red Cross continues to help evacuees across the state and in El Paso.
Supplies have been dropped off at the Civic Center, where several thousand evacuees may arrive between the present time andTuesday.
“We’re here answering phone calls and trying to take phone calls from evacuees,” said Stacey Wright, from the El Paso Chapter of the American Red Cross. “We ready if we do need to opena shelter and we have staff ready.”
Red Cross personnel are fielding hundreds of phone calls. Many of the callsare from people wanting to know if they can join the organization and help aid victims in the hurricane-battered Gulf Coast.
The organization is still looking for volunteers, but officials are primarily interested in those who have had some experience in disaster management.Peoplewith little or no experience, called “spontaneous volunteers” by Red Cross personnel, are being turned away.
No further training or orientations are scheduled, Red Cross officials said, adding that the time has come for action in the affected areas.
