One person died after shots were fired at that location, police said. Alfonso De Anda, an 11-year veteran of the El Paso Fire Department was shot in the chest by a police officer.

De Anda died after he was taken to Thomason Hospital for treatment. De Anda allegedly had beenassaulting his wife, Martha De Anda, who is also a police officer.

Officers tell ABC 7 the woman’s face appeared to have beaten, though she wasn’t suffering from serious injures. They reported the suspect was pointing a gun at his wife when they arrived at the home.

Sergeant Kenneth Law is identified as the officer who fired the lone, fatal shot. Law reported that De Anda had refused to surrender his gun.

“These are veteran officers of the EPPD with a lot of training. It’s a split second that has to be made that decision between the life or death of a victim and also their own lives,” police spokesman Javier Sambrano said.

As procedure, Law will be placed on administrative duty during an investigation and will also take stress management counseling, Sambrano said.
