Crews Work To Drain Muddy Water From Soggy Hatch

HATCH, N.M. (AP) – Pumps were draining muddy water from downtown Hatch as crews repaired a breached arroyo near the southern New Mexico town.

Hundreds of residents were evacuated from Hatch and low-lying areas south to RinconTuesday as heavy rain proved to be too much for an arroyo.

The arroyo breached on both sides.

In the main part of Hatch, the water was up to bumpers and doors of vehicles.

Crews worked through the night to repair the arroyo.

Dona Ana County spokesman Jess Williams says officials believe it can handle the load if more rain falls.

Meanwhile, police reopened most of the roads that had been closed around Hatch.

Police weren’t allowing access to flooded areas until they could be checked to make sure they’re safe.
