Albuquerque Boxer Released From Hospital

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) – Five-time world champion boxer Johnny Tapia has been released from an Albuquerque hospital, where officials say he’d been treated for an apparent cocaine overdose.

The 40-year-old Tapia was upgraded from serious to fair condition yesterday at Presbyterian Hospital and was released later in the day.

He’d been taken to the hospital Monday after paramedics responded to an early morning call about someone who wasn’t breathing at an Albuquerque hotel room.

Albuquerque police say it appeared to be an overdose and that Tapia would be charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Police had discovered a plastic bag of cocaine.
