Heavy Storms Moving Through The El Paso Area

EL PASO, TX. – The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warningfor the entire El Paso area including Ft. Bliss and Anthony until 2:45 p.m.

Heavy rains are currently being reported on the westside of the city while central, northeast and the lower valley also report downpours. There are several calls of drivers having their vehicles inundated with water along portions of Mesa Street.

At approximately 11:30 a.m. rain began pouring along parts of Interstate 10, bringing traffic to a crawl near I-10 at Porfirio Diaz. Also traffic has slowedon the westbound lanes near UTEP.A portion of the storm system has moved just south into Mexico. The bulk of the system appears to be moving toward the southwest. Arroyo and stream flooding advisories are still in effect until 2:15 p.m. Even though the Flash Flood Warning is set to expire at 2:45, the Flood Watch remains in effect until midnight tonight.

Nearly2″ of rain have fallen at KVIA studios within an hour’s time on El Paso’s westside at Mesa and Executive Center Drive.El Paso International Airport is now reportingno delaysin flight schedule, though flights out of Dallas-Fort Worth have a delay ofapproximately1 hour and 45 minutes. Police are closing Gateway Blvd. West at the 2500 block due to flooding.Police are assisting traffic atPaisano at Executive Center.

There still exist some areas of stormy weather just west of Las Cruces, south of I-10 and southwest of Hatch, New Mexico.

Many areas on the westside of the city currently being affected by these rains have construction projects in progress working to repair and upgrade from damage caused this time last year from Storm 2006.
