UT Freshman, Andress Star, Arrested In Austin
EL PASO, TX. – Former Andress High School football star and current University of Texas freshman defensive tackle Andre Jones, wanted for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, has been arrested in Austin.
Jones, who turns 18 today, has been charged with the first-degree felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison. His bond has been set at $40,000. According to the arrest warrant, Jones is accused of being with another player, former Texas safety Robert Joseph, who broke into a Southeast Austin apartment last Friday. Joseph was listed in the warrant as ‘N.O.’ short for “New Orleans” a name by which he was referred toby teammates.
A resident told police the other man was armed with a handgun and threatened to kill a 14-year-old boy in the apartment. Jones, who is 6-foot-5, 295-pounds, is identified as the “big guy” accomplice, who acted as if he had a gun in his waistband. At one point, the victim said he lifted his shirt and reached for a chrome object in his waistband.
Jones was identified in a photo lineup. The pair allegedly stole cash, cell phones and video game equipment from the apartment and its occupants. Jones was El Paso’s top football recruit last season and signed a letter-of-intent with the University of Texas. He graduated from Andress High early and enrolled at Texas in January.
