El Pasoans encouraged to donate blood – give the gift of life this holiday season

EL PASO, TX (KVIA) -- Giving back to those in need is always apart of the holiday spirit, and for some, that means giving the gift of life. Blood donations are a critical need in our community especially during this time.

Monique Hilverding, senior donor recruitment representative, emphasizes that only 3% of the nation donates. Leaving a crucial gap in the 125 units of blood required daily to support 19 area hospitals. With daily emergencies ranging from car accidents to surgeries and cancer treatments, the holiday season often witnesses a decline in donations, making it crucial for the community to step up.

If you are wondering if you are eligible to donate, Hilverding encourages all potential donors to consider giving it a try.  “I would say if you're thinking about it, just come and try it, because our requirements change pretty often and a lot of things that in the past we've told, you know, things like travel, a lot of that is okay now,” she emphasizes. Even recent tattoos or piercings are generally acceptable if professionally done.

To donate blood today and find a location near you, visit vitalant.org. One single blood donation can save up to three lives.
