Watch: El Pasoans work to restore WWII jeep
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The Sun Bowl Association is doing a complete restoration of a World War II jeep and they have big plans for its future.
Volunteers came together in hopes of a having a 1942 jeep restored in time for next year's Thanksgiving Day Parade, where it will pull the new veteran's float.
Joe Daubach, Special Events Director at the Sun Bowl Association, says volunteers are excited to work on this project.
"It's just another one of these things that we can be proud of," Daubach told ABC-7. "That it represents not just one person or a group of people, but generations of people."
Restoring the Jeep to its former glory has already taken volunteers more than 1,000 work hours with more to go.
It's a labor of dedication and honor.
"Every veteran that comes in here and sees this project gets choked up because it represents a special time in U.S. history that we all had to come together as a nation," says Daubach.
The project was made possible in part by Robert Jeskey, an Army veteran and long-time volunteer, who donated 6,000 towards the restoration.
"I spend a lot of time in here with like-minded folks that like to just get down and go to work."
This is a project everyone agrees is important.
"I mean you think of that era...was community before self, country before self...and that's what brings it back.. and that's what makes it really special."
