Troops Begin Coming Home From Iraq
EL PASO, TX. – It is a moment anticipated by so many families: Troops are coming home from Iraq.
The 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Calvalry Division has been serving in Iraq for more than a year and a half. But Monday, 100 of those soldiers got to step on familiar soil and come home to their waiting families.
After more than a year and a half in Iraq, the first wave of the soldiers are leaving the war-torn country. The division is stationed in Baghdad and in Northwestern Iraq and has seen its share of difficulties.
31 soldiers from the 4th of the 1st have died. The most recent ones, 28-year-old Captain Timothy McGovern and 21-year-old Specialist Brandon Smitherman were killed earlyNovember when an explosive device detonated near their vehicle during combat.
The remaining 4,000 soldiersare scheduled to arrive in December. There are about 200 borderland-raised soldiers in the unit. The troops will be arriving at 1 p.m. Mondayafternoon at the arrival facility at Biggs Army Airfield. ABC-7 will be on handto capture all of the long-awaited reunions.
