Council Votes To Stop Albuquerque’s Traffic Camera Program

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.(AP) – The Albuquerque City Council wants to temporarily shutter cameras that catch red-light runners and speeding motorists at 20 street intersections in the city.

The council voted 3-2 Monday in favor of suspending the program pending a task force study on how effective the cameras are at reducing traffic crashes.

Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez must sign off on the council vote. The task force report is due January 15th. The cameras have generated more than $10 million dollars between July 2005 and last July.

An internal audit has found the cameras have given the city a nearly $6 million dollar surplus.
