Ex-Treasurer Sentenced On State Racketeering Charge

SANTA FE (AP) – Former state Treasurer Michael Montoya has been sentenced to four years in prison for racketeering for his role in a kickback scheme he testified about in the federal government’s prosecution of ex-Treasurer Robert Vigil.

Montoya was sentenced Wednesday in state district court. The state sentence will run concurrently with Montoya’s 40-month federal sentence.

He had pleaded guilty in November 2005 in federal court to one count of extortion and agreed to cooperate with federal prosecutors in their corruption case against Vigil.

Montoya, a Democrat, served as treasurer in 1995-2002. Vigil was deputy treasurer during part of Montoya’s tenure, and succeeded him in that office in 2003.
