Engine Problems Force Emergency Landing At O’Hare

CHICAGO (AP) – A commercial jet that had just taken off from Chicago had to dump its fuel over Lake Michigan and return to O’Hare International Airport for an emergency landing after one of its engines malfunctioned.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory says birds may have gotten caught in the engine shortly after the flight took off Monday.

The All Nippon Airways flight was bound for Japan.

Chicago Aviation Department spokesman Gregg Cunningham says none of the 189 passengers and crew members reported injuries.

Cory says the pilot followed a standard procedure by dumping fuel over the lake before landing. A plane landing with too much weight can cause structural damage to the aircraft.
