Police: Deadly East EP Wreck Caused By Street Racing
EL PASO, Texas — Police still have not released the identity of the man killed in a fiery crash on I-10 Thursday morning. They said his body was badly burned.
Investigators said two men were racing on I-10 East near Lee Trevino about 3:20 a.m. When the two cars collided and spun out of control, sideswiping one innocent driver and crashing into another on Gateway East.
There was a lot of damage to both cars that police say were racing.
“We believe we’ve identified the man that dies at the scene, but because of the condition of the body after the fire, we’re gonna have to wait,” said El Paso police spokesman Chris Mears.
Police said it could have been worse. The racers hit two other vehicles on the road, but the drivers of the those vehicles were not injured.
“They’re not just putting their own or the person that they’re racing, every other motorist or pedestrian – if they’re on a surface street – is being placed in danger,” Mears said.
Defensive driving instructor Sandra Marquez said the best way to avoid being involved in an accident is becoming a defensive driver.
“Watching your distance, watching your speed…look ahead, look in back of you…check your mirrors.”
Marquez said if you can, get yourself out of the situation — change lanes or exit the freeway. “We have no control over anyone else, but ourselves,” she said.
“It’s absolutely frustrating that anyone would think it’s a good idea to drive well over 100 mph on city streets, putting everyone else’s life in danger.”
Police continue to investigate the deadly crash. They say one of the drivers ran away from the scene, leaving behind an injured passenger. They are still looking for that driver.
