Learn About Accidental Poisoning During National Poison Prevention Week
EL PASO, Tx — March 15-21 is National Poison Prevention Week. It is a good time to remind yourself to childproof your medicines andcleaning product cabinets, and to know what to do in case you or your family member accidentally ingests poison.
“Anytime you deviate from any instructions on any product, you’re risking harm to whoever is using or taking it,” says Emilio Saenz, the Program and Research Manager for the West Texas Regional Poison Center.
The center is cohosting an event at the El Paso Zoo this weekend called the “Poison Jungle Safari.” The event will have displays set up with various household chemicals and even poisonous animals and insects, along with information on how to avoid or treat bites and stings.
Saenz says he and others at the poison center worry most about “pretty” household products. “Window cleaners come in light blue, floor cleaners come in purple, and orange,” Saenz points out.”They come in different scents. When you look at the label, they can have fruit shapes or pictures on them. They can smell like fruit.”
The Poison Jungle Safari is this Saturday from 9:30 A.M. to 3 P.M. at the Zoo.
