City Shuts Down Coronado Motel

EL PASO, Texas — About 50 people now have to fend for themselves after the city shut down the motel they were living in for code violations.

The city is forcing the Coronado Motel located at 4645 N. Mesa St. in West El Paso to shut down immediately, a receptionist at the motel confirmed.

“Yesterday they gave us a notice, they knocked on the door and said you have to be out because the city is closing down,” said evicted resident Kayla Clark.

Clark only stayed at the motel one night, but she said the short stint was a miserable one. “The bed is smaller than a twin size bed…the tv is all static. I’m like, are you serious? I feel dirty,” she said.

Complaints like those prompted city officials to look into the motel. An inspection report shows the motel’s floors, walls and even roof aren’t safe.

The report also notes electrical and plumbing violations.

But the biggest concern for inspectors was a fire alarm system that did not work. Despite the motel’s closure, some employees will be retained to serve as security for the property.

A city relocation specialist was on hand to help people find a place to stay. As for the closure, it’s not necessarily a permanent shutdown.

Inspectors say if motel management addresses all of the issues, they can reopen for business.
