Socorro ISD to hire 23 new police officers, assign them to all elementary schools

The Socorro Independent School District announced plans Monday to hire 23 new police officers in the coming months, with the goal of assigning them to the district’s elementary schools.

The board of trustees voted last week to approve a recommendation from Superintendent Jose Espinoza to update the job description for the district’s police officers.

The district said the revised job description allows it to go forward and hire the 23 police officers.

“In the Socorro Independent School District, our actions speak louder than our words when it comes to the safety and security of our students and staff which has always been our number one priority,” Espinoza said in a statement. “Over the last six years, we have continuously invested in safety improvements district wide. We will now have police officers at all of our schools, including elementary campuses, to provide an extra layer of security for all our stakeholders.”

The district said it anticipates adding the new officers will cost more than $1 million which will come from the district’s general fund.
