El Paso teen will earn the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America Program

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The prestigious Eagle Scout Badge is only given to about 2% of young men. After meeting a list of requirements the teens must complete an Eagle Project.

Paul Cyr chose to renovate the Kelly Center for Hunger relief. Through donations and selling homemade cookies, Cyr raised $750. Cyr says the paint, which was the most expensive part of the project was a donation from Saint Clement's Church.

"One of the requirements for the Eagle Scout project is it needs to be lasting. So when you come back 10 years from now, 20 years, you want the project still to be there," Cyr said.

In addition to giving Kelly Center for Hunger relief a new paint job, Cyr is also giving their community closet new department store inspired dressing rooms. With the help of other scouts, parents and friends, people who visit Kelly's community closet will soon have a new dressing room.

Cyr is just one of the 9 scouts in Troop 191 EL Paso, under the direction of Scoutmaster Presi Ortega that will earn their Eagle Scout Badge. Ortega is responsible for over 30 Eagle Scouts here in the Sun City. After 15 years of service to his troops and the community Ortega is retiring.

He says once he retires he plans to spend more time doing the things he loves. He says the Boy Scouts of America Program gives young boys a better chance at life.

"Life can be so unfair. But when they're learning skills like, let's say, for example, painting or some of the merit badges include, community service in the community and things like that, it just gets them better prepared to face the world," Ortega said.
